Court Room Rules
Cell Phone Policy
YWCA Teen Court Program has general rules regarding Teen Conduct. Court Room rules are similar to rules in schools, a library or church. Breaking the rules could result in a loss of community service hours or jury duty credit. For some respondents it could result in a referral to Family Court. The whole idea of Teen Court is to give the oppurtunity for youth to prove themselves a positive member of society and remove charges from their criminal record. ALL volunteers are required to sign a confidentiality oath. Be respecful! It's not respectful to talk about a Teen Court Hearing outside of Teen Court. Before each hearing it is important to sign in your name and what school you attend. This way we can credit you for your hours. We cannot remember all the kids we work with, who left and who came; It is up to you to sign yourself in (but dont worry we remind you often before the case)...Then at the end of the night you must be signed out by a PARENT or GUARDIAN. Not your bestfriend, cousin, love of your life, sister's aunty's dentist's dog walker or neighbor. If there is a personal circumstance or emergency we need a note/phone call/email/ text etc from the PARENT or GUARDIAN. (Typical circumstances include: Living less than a mile away so you can walk or having your own license/vehicle) The whole Sign in/Sign out procedure is linked to the title above.
Before or after a hearing Teen Court permits access to your cell phone. However, some rules apply. You should not be looking at anything innappropriate. A good way to check if it's not approrpriate: If you wont show staff what you are looking at, it's probably too inapprorpiate for Teen Court. If you want to listen to music you must have your headphones in. And lastly, we collect phones in a basket before court begins. If you don't like other's touching your phone, being away from your phone, your phone being in a basket etc DONT BRING IT.
