YWCA HAWAII ISLAND TEEN COURT PROGRAM
It's not just about Court, It's about Community
Teen Court has developed partnerships with several Community Programs. Teen Court consistently stays informed of counseling resources through BISAC, Lokahi, and Ka Ala Pono. Teen Court's staff also assists other Community Programs such as Ola I Ka Hina by providing evidenced based curriculum, teaching life skills, and assisting youth in planning for the future! Teen Court also regularly works with different Community Service Sites, to assist our youth in completing their required hours. And most importantly when there are no court cases Teen Court's Ohana comes together to learn, create and grow. We do arts and crafts, teach life skills, practice moral reasoning and much more. Our Teens here have fun while connecting with their Community.
"What is Crime" Moral Reasoning Excercise. This is one of many Moral Reasoning discussions the youth had. In this discussion the teens explained what their definition of crime was. Afterwards the teens were split up into groups and had to rate 20 crimes from "Worst Crime" to "Not so worse Crime". The crimes ranged from drug dealers being killed to someone driving without a lisence. The groups then compared their answers!
This was a craft project using coffee mugs and nail polish. Our volunteers had oppurtunity to make somehting unique. During this craft, the Teens were able to let loose, have fun, and talk story.
Making Mother's Day cards! The Teens told staff they really enjoyed this craft. They had fun with eachother making paper vases and flowers!
Seasonal Crafts! Spring time baskets with colored eggs and decorating gingerbread houses!
This was a communication activity where youth were instructed to write down directions on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. After writing it down, they had to pass their instructions to a partner and follow what the partner wrote . We discussed why having/using clear instructions is important in life and in the courtroom!
